SUPPORT SARGE’S WHILE CELEBRATING YOUR PET
by Cynthia Morris

The Jeweler’s Workbench at 80 N. Main Street in Waynesville is hosting a reception Friday, May 4 from 6-9PM to introduce the exquisite pet carvings of Elesa Osman. The reception, an Art After Dark event, will feature the 3 separate styles of Osman’s art: carving in the round (3-dimensional sculpture), relief (a shallow carving utilizing light and shadow) and woodburning (portraits).

Among the works on display is a remarkable replication of Solo, the dog known as The Jeweler’s Workbench “cover dog.” “Elesa has captured Solo’s heart through his eyes,” said Jeannie Tracy, owner of the gallery. “You can feel his personality.”

The Jeweler’s Workbench will be accepting commissions for Mrs. Osman’s work. All profits from these commissions will be donated to Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation to be applied toward the purchase of land for its proposed adoption center.

Elesa Osman and her husband Neal moved to Sylva in 1997. She received her first set of carving tools from Neal as a Christmas gift in 1998. When the trees were being cut to allow their home to be built, Osman said, “Something beautiful should come out of this destruction.”

She joined the wood carving group at the Golden Age Center in Sylva where the members became her mentors. Now she is an award-winning carver and a teacher of her craft.

“Thought, research, visualization and thinking, thinking, thinking go into each carving,” said Osman. She takes into consideration skeletal anatomy, habits, changes of season and environment for each animal. The finished work is one that will be treasured forever.
