Sarge volunteers Bee and Joe Volpe have organized the two display cases on the first floor of the Haywood County library to promote Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation for the month of April. “We chose April to coincide with Sarge’s 6th Annual Pet Photo contest,” said Bee Volpe.

“However, the main reason for the display is to highlight ways the community can get involved in helping us rescue animals from the Haywood County Animal Control facility.” One of the displays has general information regarding Sarge’s volunteer opportunities. “There are so many ways to get involved with rescue. We always need volunteers and foster families but the volunteering can be as simple as donating items for resale”, Volpe said. Volpe also coordinates Sarge’s Ebay account. People bring items in to Sarge’s Adoption Center. Bee picks them up, puts them up for bid on eBay and then mails them. “Some of the best sellers are Tupperware and clothes and shoes that are in good condition,”said Volpe. “The response has been great. In fact, we’ve had buyers from Australia, Brazil, France and Russia. We accept any items that people donate. If it doesn‘t sell on eBay, we’ll sell it at our yard sales. We have one scheduled for June.”

The other display highlights the annual Pet Photo Contest. “We will rotate the pictures in the photo contest display to keep it interesting. Then after this years contest is judged on April 21st, we want to add some of the new pictures,” said Joe Volpe. “Since it is on the same floor as the children’s section, we get a lot of feedback. While looking at the pet photos many of the kids will talk about their own pets and tell us stories about them.”

“All of the library staff has been very supportive of this project,” said Bee Volpe. “Carole Dennis, Children’s Library Department Supervisor, said last year’s display was one of the most popular displays of the year. Patri Woods painted the background for the displays and used appliqués to make trees and critters as a back drop for the posters and photos.”

“We hope everyone who comes to the library will visit the informative and entertaining displays that Bee and Joe put together for Sarge’s, said Gary Smith, President of Sarge’s Board of Directors. “ The library is a quick trip from anyplace in town so even if people are not checking out a book or magazine, we invite them to stop by to see the display as well.”
