As part of their Service Project the third graders in Bethel Elementary School voted to donate food, toys and food dishes to Sarge's Animal Rescue Foundation for Christmas in lieu of exchanging Christmas gifts.

Diana and Michael Ritter, Sarge's adoption day volunteer co-coordinators, went to the school on January 7 to pick up the donated items and spent time with the students of Mrs. Trull, Mrs. Williamson and Mrs. Schreiber.

The Ritters took with them Sarge's foster dog, Shaney, Lilly and Lilly's two kittens. "We talked about how we rescue animals from the Haywood County animal control facility and put them in foster homes," said Michael Ritter. "Then we explained the ways we get them adopted into permanent homes."

"We had a question and answer period," said Diana Ritter, "and we were very impressed with their questions. When we asked the kids about how they take care of their pets, they gave us very good answers on how they care for their dogs and cats."

The 3rd grade classes at Bethel have donated to Sarge's in previous years. Mrs. Trull said, "The students get to nominate service projects during the holidays and then they vote on them. This is not the first year that Sarge's has had the highest vote. The students were excited, too, to know that the food and toy donations were going to the foster animals waiting to be adopted."
