Sarge's Adds Additional Weekly Adoption Day

Beginning January 13, Sarge's Animal Rescue Foundation will be hosting adoption days on Wednesdays in addition to the regularly scheduled adoptions on Saturdays. Foster animals will be available at Sarge's headquarters located at 1659 S. Main Street in Waynesville from 12:30pm-5:00pm effective Wednesday, January 13, 2010.

"We realized that we need to make it easier for the community to meet the foster dogs and cats that are available," said Steve Hewitt, Sarge's Board Vice-President. "A lot of people aren't able to come to the headquarters on Saturday and we're hoping that bringing in the animals on Wednesdays beginning at lunch time will give people who want to adopt a pet another chance to do so."

"Also, the Senior Cat Program is still in effect. Senior citizens over 60 can take home, with no adoption fee, a cat that is at least five years old," said Nancy Rhoades. "We attempt to have a senior cat at each adoption day."

Sarge's shelter volunteer selection committee works with the Haywood County animal control facility to remove adoptable cats and dogs that risk euthanasia and places them in foster homes, if those homes have space available. If necessary the volunteers relocate them to a local farm with kennels or puts them in a boarding facility until they can be transported to another state to a no-kill shelter. Space is limited in all instances.

"Its important that our dogs and cats in foster care and those waiting to be transported be adopted so that more can be rescued from the shelter. Therefore, we're hoping that providing access to the animals on Wednesdays will make a difference in the adoption rate." Hewitt said.
