Sarge's Animal Rescue Foundation and Aidan's Fund Team Up for Home for the Holidays
Press Release 11/23/09
Cynthia Morris
Haywood County Commissioners Skeeter Curtis and Mark Swanger hung a special holiday wreath today at the Haywood County animal shelter.
The wreath represents a partnership between the Haywood County animal shelter, Aidan's Fund and Sarge's Animal Rescue Foundation to help people adopt a dog or cat and give it a new home beginning with the holidays.
Sarge's and Aidan's Fund will pay a portion of the fee for animals adopted from November 23 until January 3. Adoption fees help to cover the expense of spay/neuter and rabies vaccines.
For each pet adopted during this period, a stocking with the pet's name on it will be hung in the shelter.
Jean Hazzard, Director of Haywood County Animal Control, is very enthusiastic about the holiday adoption program but cautions people to think carefully about adding a new pet to the household. Hazzard said, "Many families are not working during the holidays and this would be a good time to adopt and get a pet into the family routine. However, this should be a decision made by the family and not someone wanting to surprise another. We don't want these animals to be rejected again and returned to us. That is not fair."

"Sarge volunteers will be at the shelter to help people pick the appropriate animal for their family to adopt," said Connie Hewitt, organizer of the promotion.
"We were very happy that Commissioners Curtis and Swanger joined us today to kick off this new adoption campaign," said Hewitt. "It means a lot to Sarge's that the County leaders recognize our partnership with the shelter."
The Haywood County animal shelter is located at 245 Hemlock Street in Waynesville. Hours of operation are: Monday-Friday 9:00am-5:00pm, Saturday 9:00am-4:00pm and Sunday 12:00N-4:00pm.
