June is Adopt a Cat Month
Press Release 5/28/09
Cynthia Morris
In honor of June being National Adopt A Cat Month, the Haywood County Animal Shelter will be offering special adoption rates for cats and kittens in June. Jean Hazzard, Director of Animal Control, has been working with Sarge's Animal Rescue Foundation to seek assistance in lowering the normal adoption fees.
The June fees are $27.50 for males and $37.50 for females. These fees are $30 lower for males and $50 lower for females than normal. The fees include spay/neuter and rabies vaccination.
For every cat or kitten adopted at these special rates during June, Sarge's is offering a free litter box and bag of cat food
According to Hazzard, "The kittens have been coming in this spring along with young, surrendered family cats that the owners can no longer care for. Unfortunately, during this economic downturn few of these felines are being adopted. " Hazzard continued, "People do not adopt cats from the shelter because they can get a "free" one from the neighbor down the street. If more people would spay/neuter their cats there wouldn't be such an overpopulation. It breaks my heart to see so many ending up in our shelter. We are hoping people will take advantage of this offer and come to the shelter to adopt a cat in June. We have every color, breed, size and shape of cats/kittens imaginable."

Sarge's Animal Rescue Foundation is subsidizing the normal shelter adoption rates for cats during this month. Rosa Allomong, Sarge's President of the Board of Directors said, "I hope that people will take
advantage of the lower prices and the litter box and cat food incentives. Unfortunately, there are just not enough foster homes to give these kittens/cats more time to be adopted. Thus, we felt this was the best way Sarge's could help increase the adoption rate of cats in Haywood County."
The Haywood County Animal Shelter is located at 245 Hemlock Street (off of Brown Avenue) in West Waynesville. Offer of $27.50/$37.50 for shelter cat adoptions which includes spay/neuter and rabiesvaccine along with a free litter box and bag of cat food is good through out the month of June.
"The free Senior Cats for Senior Citizens promotion is still on-going as well," said Nancy Rhodes who coordinates the Senior adoptions. Seniors over 60 years of age can adopt the available cats over 5 years old with no adoption fee. "We have 5 senior cats available right now," Rhoades continued. They are Mary Grace, Leonard, Cary Grant, Katia, and Tinkerbell who is a beautiful Persian/Manx mix."
