Sarge's Animal Rescue Foundation's Senior Cats for Senior Citizens program was awarded a $3,000 grant from Banfield Charitable Trust.

This grant was obtained by Board member Connie Hewitt. Since there is no adoption fee charged to senior citizens who adopt foster cats over 5 years old, this grant will help to cover the vet charges for vaccinations, medicine and spay/neuter, if necessary.

"Since Sarge's began the Senior program in September 2008, fourteen cats over the age of 5 years have been placed with senior citizens," said Nancy Rhoades who initiated the program. "Oftentimes people want to adopt just kittens, but older cats are usually easier to have as pets for older people." Rhoades continued, "We test for feline leukemia and make sure they have all their appropriate shots before we adopt them out."

Rosa Allomong, Board President, said, "We are very thankful to the Banfield Charitable Trust for this grant. It will give Sarge's an opportunity to expand the Senior Cat program to pair up homeless older cats with seniors over 60 who would like to have the company of a loving pet."

Banfield Charitable Trust was established in 2003. 90% of their money comes from private donors and since they are a non-profit, 75% of that money goes to the pets that need it. The Trust chooses grant candidates from non-profit, pet-centric organizations that focus on the human-pet bond.

To meet Patches, Rosie, Cary Grant, Tiger and other senior kitties, call Nancy at 926-9579 or visit Sarge's website at www.sargeandfriends.org or www.petfinder.com. Sarge's has its weekly Saturday adoptions at 1659 S. Main Street in Waynesville. Please call ahead to be sure the Senior Cats will be there.
