Art Honors Program students from Tuscola High School have committed to a community service project with the goal to help the Haywood County Animal Shelter adopt out more pets.
As part of an Adopt A Shelter Pet campaign, Sarge's Animal Rescue Foundation's Board Member Connie Hewitt contacted art teacher Donna Rhodes at Tuscola High School to offer art students the challenge of revamping the inside of the county animal shelter. The purpose is to make the shelter a more inviting place for people to visit who would like to adopt a pet. Junior and senior students participating are Michelle Roach, Miranda White, Courtney Boessel, Stephanie Green, AJ Martin and Dale Robertson.
"I am so proud of these students." said Rhodes. "I presented this community service project to them along with other projects that would pay them for the job and they chose this one."
"The kids will also design an Adopt a Shelter Pet sign for the side of the shelter facing Hemlock Street where the shelter is located." said Hewitt. "They will begin painting the inside walls next week and their goal is to be finished by the first Open House at the shelter on Saturday, November 15."
Sarge's is sponsoring two Open House days at the Haywood County animal shelter. The first is Saturday, November 15 and the second is Saturday, December 6 from 10:00am - 3:00pm. "We'll set up tents, have refreshments, and on November 15th, HAWA will sponsor a drawing for a door prize which includes a free

spay/neuter coupon, rabies vaccination, heartworm test for dogs and feline leukemia test for cats plus a microchip" said Hewitt.
"Also during the November 15th event, every animal that is adopted requiring spay/neuter will receive a free microchip," she continued.
"Come to the shelter to meet Michelle, Miranda, Courtney, Stephanie, AJ and Dale, see the sign they designed and their drawings on the walls of the shelter," continued Hewitt, "get to know Jean Hazzard, Director of Animal Control and her wonderful staff, and, of course, meet the cats and dogs that need a good home."
