Happy Tails: Jiggy

Jiggy (formerly Tyler) was adopted by Cortney Kirkland on 5/16/09. Cortney later wrote:

"I just wanted to give you an update on Jiggy, whom I adopted from the Asheville PetSmart this past June. (His shelter name was Tyler ). After having Jiggy for just a few weeks, we were such close buddies that I felt like we had known each other for years. Since he has such a high energy level, we take each other hiking just about every day. I'm able to let him off the leash and let him explore in the woods and trails surrounding our house, and he always (or almost always!) comes back to me. The few times that I've had to leave him behind, he either beats me home or shows up half an hour later with a big smile on his face. He loves to chase squirrels, rabbits, and cats - not to kill them, but just to show me that he can find them. Then he has this "I found it!" yelp that is really high-pitched, and I tell him good job for being such a clever hunter.

Jiggy also loves swimming, and gets wet any chance he gets. If we're getting near a body of water, I ask him if he wants a cool refreshing beverage, or to go swimming, and no matter how small the creek or how deep the pond, he loves to plop himself in there and take a dip. Plus, he knows that I love to watch him swim, so he always makes sure that I'm watching him, and sometimes shows off a little bit. What a clown!

When I adopted him, he had the most unusual light-colored coat growing through his regular coat. You guys told me that he was a golden-retreiver mixed with a chocolate lab, and that he was severely underweight. After feeding him and feeding him and feeding him, he never got any fatter, and that soft lighter-colored coat fell out. Now he's got a gorgeous, shiny, rust-colored coat, and he's very lean and muscular. I looked through the dog breed books and all over the internet, and it turns out that he's a Hungarian Vizsla - likely mixed with a little something else because of the white toes, white marking on his chest, shorter ears, and longer hair. But now that I know what he is, I understand why he is the way he is, and I love his passion for adventure, his companionship, and his sensitivity.

He's so cute and predictable - he's really hyper in the mornings and afternoons, but once it gets dark, he gets really snuggly and thinks he's a lap dog. Last night he curled up between me and my boyfriend while we were reading together. He just sprawled out on both of our laps and made himself comfortable. Within a minute he was snoozing and having a doggy-dream.

When I got him, you guys said that he was probably between one and two years old, so I just decided that he would be one and a half. Now that I've had him 6 months, he's coming up on his 2nd birthday, and we'll spend it with my brother's dogs (his "cousins") and take a nice long hike near Mount Mitchell . I can't think of anything that would make him happier - forests and friends!

Thanks again for introducing me to Jiggy, my best canine friend. I have no idea what his life was like before I met him, but now I can't imagine my life without him!
